Size of RAMs in Bits or Bytes that we build?

sk
Hi everybody , it confuses me a little bit, if we just say i.e RAM4K or RAM16K. I know that RAM4K means there are 4K registers. But do we mean Bit or Byte in the context of the RAMs , that we build? Commercially if we speak 4GB RAM of course we mean 4G Bytes. Thanks.

Greetings

Since a RAM4K has 4K 16-bit registers, it has 8K 8-bit bytes or 64K bits.
