Screen not working in CPU emulator, VM emulator in Mac OS El Capitan

The screens in the CPU emulator and VM emulator don't work after updating my Mac to El Capitan (OS X 10.11.3). Even manually changing screen memory locations in the CPU emulator doesn't result in pixels showing up on the screen.

Has anyone else seen this? Know of a fix?  Is this a java issue -- would installing legacy java help?

Any thoughts appreciated.

Do you have the 1.8 JDK (not JRE) installed?

I've noticed this issue on students' machines, but the problem is resolved after installing the JDK and re-running the emulators.
