I am looking at the truth tables of what I am trying to get to, and then the truth tables of the pieces and then play around with the pieces (gate implementation) until it outputs what I need. As I practice doing this more, it seems to get more intuitive. Sometimes the Canonical form is what I go with, for instance with the Mux.

This is making more sense to me, thanks a lot for your insights.
