the book "Code", really opened my eyes to better understand how all this works, and was my first real introduction to logic gates (using relay switches), a few years ago. Its my favorite book, and I re-read it every few years (with hopes and dreams of building a relay-based computer)

Logisim is a great tool for simulating hardware -- but buying actual chips and a breadboard to assemble is much more fun :)

and I only recently discovered the play-hookey site myself too... it also helps explain thing quite simply.
