If I use Microsoft Word to edit the Not.hdl file, there is no option for saving it with the .hdl extension.  If I use any other extension then the hardware simulator runs my file and returns an error.  How do I get my computer to save as .hdl ?

Use notepad. Or, better yet, try Notepad++ or Sublime Text 2.
